Coleman is a Lancashire native. She attended Arnold School in Blackpool. She was a headgirl and earned straight A grades for her A-Levels. Steven Moffat, the producer of Doctor Who confirmed in a 21st March press conference on the show that Coleman will be Matt Smith's companion following the departure of Karen Gillan left. Moffat chose her due to the ease with which she worked alongside Smith, and that she was faster at speaking than Smith.
